We attended a wedding this evening. The bride has been a friend of HS since kindergarten. In fact, this is the first time we’ve attended the wedding of one his friends.
Not too surprisingly, HS and his girlfriend opted to sit with a bunch of his high school friends instead of his parents and sister. At one point, I went over to their table to say hello. As I was standing there, the DJ put on the song “Footloose.” One of HS’s buddies, who could be Dick Van Dyke reincarnate if a) I believed in reincarnation and b) Dick Van Dyke weren’t still alive, started to dance by himself on the edge of the crowd.
This buddy has been like a second son to us for years. “I’m going to dance with Buddy,” I announced. And I did.
We were happily dancing away, still on the edge of the crowd, when I noticed a strange phenomenon. The rest of the dancing crowd was fading away. Apparently, the mix of a 50 year old mom and a 22 year old loose-limbed dancer had cleared the floor.
“BD is going to kill me,” I told Buddy when we passed close enough for conversation.
Of couse, once you clear the floor, you have no choice but to finish the dance. So I did, with a ridiculous grin on my face (I’m pretty sure I saw a bunch of camera flashes, so I may someday be presented with evidence of this).
I touched base with Mr. B immediately afterward and asked how BD had reacted. “I think she left. I don’t think she saw it,” he reported.
After breathing a sigh of relief, I went back to see HS. BD was next to him. “Dad doesn’t think she saw it,” I whispered to him.
“She was crying,” he reported.
I’m voting for tears of laughter.

Oh wow! I guess my kids were lucky that I had threw my back out the morning of our reunion, because they played Footloose and I couldn’t dance at all. Altho they did, and didn’t object a bit when my 39 yr old cousin joined in. Of course, he’s way funnier than I!
