Musical Beds

HS arrives home tomorow night from his third summer running workcamps for church youth groups.  But this time he won’t be heading south right away to start another semester in Tennessee.  He’ll be starting graduate school much closer to home.
But he’s decided (and we agree) that living at home is perhaps not such a great idea.  [...]

Is It Possible?

I can’t possibly be the mother of a college graduate.   But apparently I am.
UPDATE: Welcome, Michele’s readers!  For those of you who are new to this site and want to see what an English major looks like, you can see a photo at this post about another recent accomplishment.

Marathon Man

HS ran in his first marathon recently.  He says it is also most likely his last.  Afterward, he was almost as stiff and sore as his father and I are when we wake up every morning.
His goal was to run it in three and a half hours.  For those of you who don’t follow running, that means he [...]

He Got His Talent From His Mother, Of Course

I’d like to write a post bragging about how our son won another award at college this spring.  But that would be a lie.
He won two.  Including English student of the year (actually, they award two of those, but he wasn’t qualified for the female one).
Besides, if I really were the type to brag, I’d also [...]

Good News

I have plenty of good news to share, but I got stubborn and was holding off writing till at least one person commented on my last post.  Many thanks to Marie for stepping up to the plate!
HS has been home on spring break this week.  That, of course, is good news in itself.  But while [...]

Raising a Stink

For a kid who drank at least one 20-ounce soda every day of his sophomore year of high school, HS has become quite the healthy eater.  Oatmeal for breakfast every morning, often with a carrot chaser.  If we were out of salad for his afternoon snack, he’d cook a bowl of mixed vegetables.  Instead of reaching for [...]

Growing Up

HS emailed me yesterday.  Not from his college address.  Not from the somewhat goofy hotmail address that he chose when he was about 14.
This was from his brand new webmail account.  I’ll describe it in his words: “a legitimate (in other words: really boring) email address.”  You know, the kind that incorporates some form of your actual [...]

Is There an Echo in Here?

The old blog is feeling kind of empty these days, as I have been too busy to post much.  The end is in sight, but not for another couple of weeks.  Two major volunteer projects, then catch up on the paid stuff I’m neglecting, and by then I should have a whole slew of exciting [...]

Hello Goodbye

Today I’m happy that HS is such a good student.
I’m happy that he enjoys college so much.
I’m happy that he’s an RA and gets a free apartment this year.
I’m happy that we only have one more year of tuition payments.
I’m NOT happy that he just got home on Saturday and is leaving for school today.

Oh Happy Day (for real this time)

Today’s happiness post is a piece of cake.
Our boy’s coming home.
Yup.  For six whole days before he heads for his (gulp!) senior year.
